Frequently Asked Questions

What should you know about buying an air conditioner?

When you’re ready to purchase an air conditioner there are a few things to consider to ensure that you install the best air conditioning system for your home.

A heat gain calculation must be done in order to pick the right size of air conditioner, square footage, windows, and age of the home come into effect when picking your new air conditioner!

If a unit is too large for your home it is not going to remove the moisture from your home and not cool it properly. If a unit is too small it is going to work extra hard to cool your home and your hydro bill will increase.

Maintenance is another important thing to consider when purchasing your air conditioner. It needs to be maintained yearly in order for you to keep your unit effective and efficient. In doing this your hydro bills will not increase, your air conditioner will last longer and it will also help keep the warranty of your unit.

Changing your filter regularly is one of the most important tasks. A clogged or dirty filter will block air flow and this can cause dirt to get into the coil. This will result in impairing the coils’ heat-absorbing capacity! Changing the filter will save you money on your electricity bill as the unit does not need to work as hard to get the cold air into your home! These repairs can become very costly if your air conditioner is not serviced on a yearly basis. Ask Hyde-Whipp about our maintenance packages!

How can I reduce the “air pollution” in my home?

One way to reduce air pollution inside your home is to install an air purification system. An air cleaning system is a device that removes contaminants from the air. This can include pollen, pet dander, mold spores, dust mites, smoke particles and other volatile organic compounds that can cause “sick building syndrome.” Air purifiers are also capable of capturing bacteria and viruses; they can help reduce airborne contaminants that effect allergy and asthma sufferers.

There are many different types of air cleaning systems in the markets today. We offer a whole-home filtration system that can remove up to 99.98% of airborne particles and allergens from the filtered air your family breathes.

Another method to improve indoor air quality is to install an HRV (heat recovery ventilation). This unit helps to bring in fresh outdoor air into your home and remove the stale indoor air. It can also recover heat and moisture enhancing the efficiency of your heating and cooling system. With spring in Ontario just around the corner and allergy season beginning to start up it is a good idea to install an air purification system to help prevent the 72 trillion microscopic irritants that could find their way into your home.

Is there anything I can do before calling in a service technician for heating?

Here are 7 simple tips you can do before calling Hyde-Whipp Heating and A/C.

  1. Check the thermostat to make sure it is on; make sure the switch is on heat and check the temperature setting. Replace the battery, you can also open the stat and gently blow out and dust or debris. Make sure it is attached firmly to the wall.
  2. Check shutoff switches and breakers are on.
  3. Change the filters. Dirty filters are the most common cause of furnace problems.
  4. Make sure the gas is on. Someone may have turned the gas valve off and forgotten to turn it back on. Trace the gas line back from the furnace to the meter.
  5. Make sure the chimney exhaust flue is clear. Birds and debris can sometimes fall into chimney exhaust flue.
  6. Look for blocked or leaky ducts that can restrict airflow. If your furnace comes on but one or two rooms are cold make sure all the registers are open, examine any ductwork you can get access to and look for gaps between sections. You seal these gaps with special metal duct tape. Do not use standard cloth or duct tape.
  7. Clean away leaves and debris from heat pumps or intake and exhaust vents. If your furnace vents out the side of the house, make sure nothing is blocking the intake or exhaust.

If ice is clogging one of the pipes, you may have a bigger problem somewhere in the system. Clear it off and call Hyde-Whipp Heating and A/C (519) 941-8429 to find out why it’s happening.

How can I prepare my home for the upcoming fall and winter seasons?

With school fast approaching and fall just around the corner, people are starting to think about the indoors and some upgrades or secondary heat sources for their home in Orangeville or the surrounding area. Being prepared for severe weather in our area is not a matter of if but of when. Storms are on the rise and widespread power outages have been occurring more and more. There are steps you can take to protect yourself and your family when the weather turns particularly nasty.

Why should you have a secondary heat source?

Many of us suffered from no power for a few days this past winter, with no electrical power. Furnaces, electric base boards and electric fireplaces do not work. Also you run the risk of pipes freezing because your house is not maintaining any heat. This is why it is important to have a secondary source of heat for your home. One of the best options is a gas or propane fireplace they do not go out when your power does! These fireplaces can stay on because they create their own electricity. Another option is a gas powered generator which can be installed directly to a natural gas or propane line. All these appliances will keep an area of your home warm enough for your family to sleep in so everyone is kept comfortable getting through the inconvenient power outages.

When the lights go out and everyone is home, there won’t be a problem with a secondary heat source available for your family!
